Optimized Mario Is Missing Animations
by bmn » Wed Feb 06, 2013 4:38 am
hey hey, here's a little something I've been working on and off for the past month or so. using humbirds version of MiM I managed to go through every single symbol and folder to get it completely named/organized/free of duplicates/weird symbol hierarchies (anyone who's opened a playshapes source file knows this can be hell) for the sake of ocd haha. had to find the code to get the stereo music to work from a random .swf on the internet I stumbled on since it wasn't included with the .fla I downloaded, but yeah! every animation was then doubled up by hand to compensate for the higher framerate and I even managed to throw in a couple of my own in there for good measure.
anyway the reason I'm posting this is just to show what an optimized game could look like with proper animations and stuff! also feedback would be nice, obviously the messed up jump animation that triggers whenever you're in the air isn't working as intended but still. :p I'm by no means a programmer but I'd love to work with someone (-cough- humington) to maybe get a small part time project going here and there. get at me broskis.

If you are willing to help out with making animations better, why don't you go help out Ivan? He needs an animator. This way, you can be involved as much as you want, as you don't have to do all the animations, just as many as you want. Please, will you think about it?

What Quiz said.
Animations are really smooth.
My only complaint would be when Peach is walking down a hill / stairs... looks like the code keeps restarting either the fall animation or run cycle (can't tell).

I like it!
I want to comment out some things.
1. Playshapes and HummingBird are THE guys. Without their help, Blargh, me and other developers would not get that far. We have to thank them everyday.
2. I love her mouth/tongue in your version. I may use it/recreate it
3. I also love your new Koopa scene. She swallows it...then she swallows it...stronger...then again, she swallows it at top power! But I use a better picture of koopa because this one is...too big and dark.
4. I didnt like the walking animation because its like she's...jogging in a 'so organised behavior' (like sports). And when she falls, its like she's taking pictures in a steady state. :/ (just my opinion, as I know people who prefer the sporty pace).
5. You should use gotoAndStop instead of gotoAndPlay when exchanging animation/poses (like when she climbs down ladders), otherwise she will be restarting that animation everytime she loses collision.
Other than that, for sure you're doing a nice job!
If you are willing to animate some scenes for my project, you're welcome! We have 68 enemies so far, 17 levels and five different Peach perspectives while interacting in the level (side facing, side forward, frontside, backside and crouched/on four). The only requirement is to have an ENF (embarassed nude female) taste, mostly in the beginning (like Peach covering her eyes, Peach looking left/right as being shy...) You can know more about the project and its goal in page1 of MIM PUT thread.

Some acceptable animations, thought I wouldn't see that for this project. If the game had acceptable level design as well, then it could be a pretty good package.

Most impressive.
The fluid animation structure you've adapted to the original makes the game appealing, despite it's comparibly outdated models.
In short, I'm gonna play the hell out of this a few times.
I applaud you, good sir. Now, I must retreat to my corner of solitude. *Shrinks*

hey guys, thanks a bunch for the kind words and suggestions! I've seen Ivan's project and it's going in a direction that I'm not that into so I will have to pass. needless to say he's doing at great job at progressing at his own pace.
*edit for info*

Whoa, slow down for a sec. Can you please explain what that direction is? Discussion is what this all is about and you should definitely tell us your thoughts. That only makes the game better.

If I may interject, as much as I enjoy you guys' enthusiasm for the game, you don't have to hound him over his decision. If I had to guess, I'd imagine the reason he doesn't like your direction is because it's so ambitious; it started off as a game with two levels and a few scenes and now it's some 30 levels with I have no idea how many scenes and new mechanics and all this other stuff. While many people enjoy it, trying to optimize it would be flat out ridiculous because there's just so much to work with and it keeps getting bigger.
I'm guessing he just wants a smaller project. He even mentions in the first post that he's looking for a small time project, nothing too fancy. I doubt he has any specific problems with your actual game, he's probably just looking for something else.

I wasn't trying to hound him, we just want to know why, so we can improve. I'm not going to send messages repeatedly, or necro this topic for the reason of finding that out. And this IS a long-term project, plus we aren't asking him to optimize everything. He can work at his own pace. If he just wants to optimize Peach's walkcycle, that's okay, or just the sex scenes with the Goombas, that's okay too.
So yeah, that's all we want to know, nothing more.
